Judges Critique

Dogs - Janet Lewis

Minor Puppy Dog

1. Gill and Cook - Gillaber Tomnavoulin. Minimal white markings, well grown dark slate, really good length to height, lovely strong head, dark eyes, excellent pigmentation, very goo depth and length of rib, very long reaching stride, maybe too angulated at rear for some but a lovely puppy.

2.Lavine - Yawdem Absolute. Smaller boy, light grey with text book white markings, lovely balance throughout, very nice outline, moved really well front and rear, covering the ground well, would like him to grow on for a bit.

3. Moorhouse - Willowmead Just Wonderful

Puppy Dog

1. Bailey - Raggamoor Isle of Lewis. Medium grey well coated boy, again lovely length to height ratio, good neck and front, nicely angulated, strong rear end, good tail carriage, moved very well with really easy reaching stride. BP.

2. Finch - Dajue's Dixieland Jazz Taf.Different type of puppy good size, nice masculine head, lovely expression, good neck and shoulders, not quite the length to height balance of 1 but well put together and in good coat, moved well.

3. Hicks - Multan Master Touch

Junior Dog

1. Pryde - Cherrytops Comet. Lovely outline, good length and topline well up to size, strongly made dog, really good masculine head, broad flat skull, strong foreface, good neck going into excellent shoulders, deep long ribcage and strong hindquarters, moved very soundly in class but could do with a bit more animation, nice coat.

2. Hardy - Otterswish O'Connor. Lovely head and outline, nice neck and shoulder, good chest with correct rib, very nicely angulated hindquarters with strong hocks, moved very well.

3. Thorpe - Merrythorpe Mistletoe.

Graduate Dog

1. Bissett - Runival Ruthven. Totally unexaggerated in any way, lovely balance throughout, nice outline, good flat skull with gentle expression, arched neck going into well laid shoulders, correct ribcage, strong back, nice rear end, moved steadily at all times which won him this class.

2. Hagan - Sunnyvale Sirius. Rather profusely coated dark slate, strong head, good neck and shoulders, very deep ribcage. good length of back, moved with a lot of drive covering plenty of ground but a little erratic.

3. Scott - Applejack at Ramberhay.

Post Graduate Dog

1. Garrity and Tibbetts - Hable Huckleberry. Very pale in colour at the moment, which does not help his appearnce, but a difficult dog to fault, good head and eye colour, nice neck, correct length of rib and good topline, well angulated rear, good tail carriage, presented and shown very well, again a very sound steady mover which won him the class.

2. Hallett - Poshpaw Secret Dreams. Good size dog in very good coat, loved his type and balance, strongly made, lovely head and expression, very deep ribcage, strong hindquarters, moved well but needs less weight.

3. Hall - Gillaber Cairngarroch.

Limit Dog

1. White - Moonhill Does It In Style. This young dog and his handler really pulled out the stops, in really good condition just the right amount of body, felt good to go over, nice masculine head with soft expression, good neck and long upper arm which gave him good front extension, correct depth and length of rib, good topline and tail carriage, really strong hindquarters and hocks which gave him plenty of drive, showed and moved well, just preferred the shoulder and front of Roin for the CC on the day. RCC.

2. Hyde and Bush - Natterjacks Just One Look. Dark slate with striking outline, excellent pigment and nice eye colour, lovely arched neck and well laid shoulders, good topline, well constructed all through and therefore a very well balanced easy mover, just preferred head of1, very close decision.

3. Williamson - Shabiera Starstream.

Open Dog

1.Marshall and Burnett - Colliela Roin. Correct size, masculine dog, strongly made but not heavy, lovely outline and balance with super length to height proportions, broad flat skull, dark eyes, lovely neck, excellent lay of shoulders and lovely deep long ribcage, moved really well with real lightness of foot covering the ground with ease, really true Beardie type. CC.

2. Brooks and Grundy - Ch. Braddabrook Botzaris of Fraglestone. Another nice masculine dog, really lovely strong head, super dark eye, deep long ribcage, good strong hindquarters and hocks, moved very well, just lost RCC as he didn't go so well when called back to challenge the Limit winner.

3. Platts - Camberwick Song of Solomon.

Bitches - JUDGE : MISS PAT JONES WELLKNOWE

A good entry, an excellent ring and capable stewards awaited me at Birmingham. The weather although cold, was dry, and enabled everyone to use all the ring space.

I was concerned about the amount of Beardies competing, that in my opinion are simply 'pets' with incorrect construction. I hoped that when I last judged this breed, that that entry had been substandard, but no, 2 years later there are still many that should be lying by someone's fire-side. Whereas I realise, that some were owned by in-experienced owners, who simply enjoy their hobby, many were owned and indeed bred, by more experienced owners.

A new innovation in Beardie owning was to have 30% of the entry, far too thin. As these mainly appeared in the younger classes, I do worry for the bitches health at a critical time of growth and development. An "active lean dog", does not interpret into thin (some were poor) without muscle. For those who do not clearly understand fitness, pay attention to racehorses, greyhounds and working sheepdogs (which includes Beardies) These animals are hard-muscled and firm to the touch, and get this way from long periods of correct feedings and the right sort of excersise, with the age of the animal always taken into account.

Correct long and deep ribcages, shoulders angled and in the correct place ie. not behind the ears, are in the minority. Please remember, that a working dog requires the correct construction as a necessity for the job of work that it can do because it is a pet/showdog only, does not mean that this can be forfeited. Remember too, that stress placed on bad joints, means problems in the future.

The placed dogs, I considered to be made right, all had good heads, correct construction, and were able to move freely. The Bitch CC winner was superb, she is excellently constructed, a lovely balanced head. Rather too much coat can at first glance make her appear heavy, which she is not. A beautiful mover with an effortless ground covering stride. I wish her well. Pleased to see her take BOB and also be pulled out in the Group.

Minor Puppy Bitch (13)

1. Thompson & Cinnamon. - Whats Cooking. Biggish 8 month, moved well, O.K. for age.

2. Brown - Braddabrook Naomi at Tarcalian. Scopy 7 months baby. Needs lots of time, but promising.

3. Cant - Thistle Bank Double Exposure.

Puppy Bitch (9)

1. Wooton - Talraz Princess Royal. Best Puppy Bitch. Quality one, very correct, moved well when she kept her head up.

2. Brown - Tarcalion Princess Royal. Younger dark bitch very well made, needs everything to come on and should be a top class bitch. Needs more positive handling.

3. Nichols-Ward - Bumbleridge Topsie Turvey

Junior Bitch (10)

1. Hards - Runival Loch Ba. Good bitch, that moves, well coated.

2. Brown - Cagnara Just My Style. Similar remarks to 1, not as forward as 1.

3. Pedder - Osmart She's Silver Slippers

Graduate Bitch (17)

1. Aughey - Aughenaird Bonnie Jean. Lovely bitch of correct size, great mover, coat good for age, handled to advantage.

2. Burfitt - Breaksea Gothic Romance. A fawn, but a good one, at the moment there is only 1 fawn Ch. - who knows! Quality bitch that moves, in good coat.

3. Hards - Runival Loch Ba.

Post Graduate Bitch (26)

1. Brooks & Gundy - Byonyhill Fondant Fancy at Fraglestone. Classy bitch that could move. Good head, size and shape. Went to sleep in the challenge but did enough for the Reserve CC.

2. Jay - Talraz Passion Fruit. Another classy bitch, who also could move, on another day these two could change places.

3. Buckley - Holtend Sweet Georgia Brown

Limit Bitch (17)

1. Peirson - Kiltondale Dignity. CC and BOB. Well done - she really is a lovely correct free moving animal. I shall watch her career with interest.

2. Nicholls-Ward. Bumbleridge Winter Wish. A vrey deceptive bitch. Super to go over very fit and muscled and a true mover. She really is much better than a passing glance would have you believe, as she appears short in neck and straight in shoulders - believe me, she is none of those.

3. Cope - Coalacre Illusion

Open Bitch (17)

1. Wareham - Vilmorin Admiralella. Pretty bitch with a lovely head. Super to go over excellent ground covering mover. good coat correct size. Fell apart in the challenge as she got slower and slower.

2. Auker/Pickford - Penhallows Paws Zarus. Lovely headed and good moving and correct size.

3. Hudson - Barkly Prima Donna

Best of Breed was decided by the referee Mrs. A. Arch, as Janet and I both liked our own choice best.
