BCC Open Show April 5th 2003

Many thanks to the Officers and Committee of the Bearded Collie Club for the warm welcome I received to judge my first Breed Open Show. I was most ably assisted by Pauline, my steward, who was excellent and kept me’ in line’. I must also thank the exhibitors for the entry, without them there would of course be no show. The entry was interesting, the quality in bitches being higher than dogs. On the positive side I found heads acceptable with only a few really narrow skulls and long forefaces. There were the usual amount of light eyes but a lot of these will darken with age. Teeth were reasonably clean as were coats and temperaments were excellent as expected. Unfortunately there is always a down side and I found an extraordinary amount of level bites, well constructed fronts and long deep rib cages were in the minority and I found very few in hard condition. Having spent much of my youth conditioning horses for show and work I know how important it is to feed and exercise correctly to produce the right amount of hard, flat muscle which will enhance the outline and movement of any animal. Many paid the price of a higher place because of lack of body or in some cases too much. I felt all my principal winners were sound, fit and free moving.

DOGS

Minor puppy (4,2) 1. Fergusons Odderwood Glade of Shade. 7 months dark slate with everything in the right place and good muscle for age. A little exuberant which I can forgive at this age but it did cost him a class later on. I saw just enough to convince me he could move; 2. Lee’s Sylvabrae Moonstruck for Paleeda. Dark slate, a month older than 1 and behaving better but not as well developed, preferred head and shoulder of 1, needs time

Puppy (4,2) 1. Buchanan-Hislop’s Ciopar Celtic Razzle’s Boy. As I write this I still cannot believe I handed the award for Best Dog to a puppy! It is not something I would have envisaged doing, however this stunning, young dark slate dog had all I was looking for and his sheer balance as I went over him could not be denied. At this age his head is developing beautifully with a super expression, one of the best fronts of the day with a long, deep rib cage and strong hindquarters. Condition just right for age and moving freely with long reaching strides, I truly hope he fulfils the promise he showed today. Best Dog, BPIS and RBIS; 2. Millers Nadene Figaro. 10 months dark slate, so unlucky to meet 1 on such form today. Much rangier pup with time on his side. Could not match the overall conformation and movement of 1.

Junior (4,0) 1. Difficult to judge as all different types. 1. Moffat’s Gallus Macracker at Kyleca. 16 months dark slate, heavier dog than I prefer but totally sound and in good condition. Handsome head and expression with strong muzzle. Adequately angulated front and rear with deep, long rib cage and strong loin. Moved and handled well. Res. Best Dog; 2. Wilding’s Bendale Special Times. 14 months brown in good coat, going through light stage, head developing well, eye toning with coat. Rangier type than 1 with excellent length to rib giving firm topline. Preferred the front of 1. Moved well; 3. Parkin’s Rosimar Wizard’s Song. Just 12 months and in heavy coat going through light stage. Lovely head and expression. Adequate shoulder angulation and length of rib. Moving a little erratically today and proud of his tail. Promising.

Special Yearling (4,0) 1. B. Special Times; 2. R. Wizard’s Song; 3. Courtney-Blake’s Bustroc Tousie Tyke. 12 months brown, smaller type who needs time to develop. Adequate length of rib and moved OK.

Maiden (3,1) 1. C. Celtic Razzle’s Boy; 2. R Wizard’s Song.

Novice (5,1) 1. C. Celtic Razzle’s Boy; 2. R Wizard’s Song; 3. Smith & Lewis’ Shenendoah Son of Potterdale. 2 year old mid slate, well proportioned but needs to develop throughout. A little anxious today and not moving to advantage.

Graduate (3,0) 1. B. Special Times; 2. Holmes Edenborough Lives On. 22 months slate- tri, lovely head and expression with good mouth. Well made dog who I have judged before and liked as he was moving with reach. Today he wasn’t interested and it showed in his movement; 3. S. Son of Potterdale

Postgraduate (4,1) All three of the ‘old fashioned’ type and had forgotten to bring their jackets. 1. Stevens Whistbrae to Sir with Love. 2 year old with very dark harsh coat coming. Strong head developing. Super front and good length to rib. Must have been the fittest dog present. Moved with ground covering strides but not happy with environment. Needs time; 2. Augheys Aughenaird Clyde’s Double. 5 year old dark slate, coat needs to finish. Taller than I prefer but strong head and dark eye. Preferred scope of 1 on the move; 3. Williams Odderwood Gold ‘n’ Copper. 4 year old dark brown. Well proportioned, preferred shoulder angulation of 1 and 2. Moved steadily.

Limit (6,2) 1. Mitchell’s Weardons Fair Choice. 4 year old mid slate. Nice type, not the biggest of dogs but well constructed with lovely head and expression. Moved well, coat just needs to finish to complete a nice picture; 2. Holmes Magedad Anakin Skywalker. 5 year old dark slate with good head and dark eye. Well constructed but totally lacked condition and coat (due to bitches in season I am told); 3. A.Clyde’s Double

Open (2,1) 1. Lavine and Steele’s Yawdem Bandmaster. 4 year old dark brown, old fashioned type. In good body condition with balanced head. Nice size. Would prefer more layback of shoulder and therefore reach on the move. Well handled and presented.

Bred by Exhibitor (5) 1. Augheys Aughenaird Double Trouble. 7 year old dark slate who I have always liked. Well constructed, sound honest dog with strong head and dark eye. At 7 years old he has settled into a better outline on the move now and coat has improved. Just carrying a little too much weight today. Still a very nice dog who cannot be overlooked. Lost out to youth in the challenge; 2. W Fair Choice; 3. B Special Times

Not Bred by Exhibitor (5,1) 1. B Tousie Tyke; 2. O Glade of Shade; 3. Thompson and Oldham’s Deanfield the Consort

Special Beginners ( no entries)

Veteran (2,0) 1. Holmes Edenborough the World Over. 10 year old dark slate. Super type with the best head of the day, wonderful expression. Excellent front and rear angulation which showed in long reaching strides on the move. A little portly today which cost him in the challenge for Best veteran – lost out to a shapely lady! 2. Fox’s Bushblades Bondmark. 7 year old dark slate. Nice type with good head and dark eye. Harsh coat of good length. Well constructed but could not match the front of 1. Moved steadily. Looked better when free-standing.

Special Working (no entries)

BITCHES

Minor Puppy (7,0) Lovely class with some promising puppies. 1. Wilford’s Bumbleridge Quintessence. 6 months dark brown at her first show. What a cheeky madam! Did everything to throw away the class. Nothing to dislike, just right in size and body condition for age. Well balanced throughout, moved a little erratically but saw enough to be able to award her the class. Best Bitch puppy; 2. Jeavons’ Merrythorpe Razzamatazz. 7 months light brown, eye should darken with coat change. Well grown with good head and front. Well bodied and moved out well. Just preferred the overall balance of 1 on the day. Promising; 3. Fox & Farrier’s Bushblades Tranquil Skies at Kayanarra. Another nice one. 8 months dark slate with strong head and dark eye. Good front and well ribbed, strong through loin. Could change places with above another day. Good luck with her.

Puppy (3,0) 1. B. Tranquil Skies at Kayanarra; 2. Newton’s Sylvabrae Smile a While. 8 month dark slate. Very old fashioned, honest type, nicely made, moved steadily. Well presented; 3. Peirson’s Kiltondale Miss Dynamite. 6 months slate. This little lady probably had the best angulation of all the puppies but was very overawed on the day and not showing her best. At this stage needs to develop all through, looks very raw but has time on her side and a very proficient handler.

Junior (4,1) 1. Patterson’s Gallus Serendipity. 16 months brown at pale stage in good coat. Lovely square, flat skull and feminine expression. Adequate front angulation and good length of rib. Moved well; 2. Carter & Palmer’s Bendale Winter Thyme of Woodacre. 15 months, longer, rangier type than 1. Prefer more width to skull and less length to foreface but time can rectify the former and produce more balance. Adequate angulation and not the length of rib of 1. Needs time to mature. Moved well; 3. Fisher & Crow’s Gallus Top Notch. 16 months litter sister to1. Preferred head to 2 but lacked rib and body condition. Moved OK

Special Yearling (6,2) 1. Griffiths Silene Maggie’s Magic. 19 months dark slate, waiting for her coat which will be of correct harsh texture when finished. Top size for a bitch but with the most exquisite head and expression, showing complete femininity. Has a lot of potential as she has a super front with good lay back of shoulder and equal return of upperarm giving scope on the move. Excellent length and depth of rib in good hard condition but could carry a little less weight to advantage. Moved freely on loose lead. Should do well; 2.G. Serendipity; 3. B. Winter Thyme of Woodacre.

Maiden (2,0) 1. B. Tranquil Skies at Kayanarra; 2. S. Smile a While

Novice (5,2) 1. . B. Tranquil Skies at Kayanarra; 2. Fisher & Crow’s Sylvabrae Golden Girl. 2 year old dark brown. Good head, moved OK. Could be better conditioned to advantage.

Graduate (10,2) 1. S. Maggie’s Magic; 2. G. Serendipity; 3. Blasdale-Holmes Balidorn Enamour. 19 months dark slate, pretty bitch with good head and dark eye. Well proportioned with little to dislike. In great coat for age and moving well. Carrying the correct amount of weight but could be harder to advantage.

Post Graduate (5,3) 1. Jemmetts Thymewinds Mystic Melody at Westbere. 3 year old mid-slate with the sweetest expression from a well balanced head. Liked her proportions. Adequately angulated front and rear with acceptable length of rib. Again could be harder in condition to show off outline and movement; 2. Palfreyman’s Barnswood Brennas Venture. 3 year old dark slate, similar in size and shape to 1 with the same femininity and dark eye. Little to choose, preferred harder condition of 2 but 1 had slightly broader skull and greater layback of shoulder. Not as settled on the move. 2 nice bitches.

Limit (7,2) 1. Moffatt’s Wellknowe Spring Breeze. 3 year old mid slate. Have seen this bitch in varying stages of her career, not always totally fit and not always giving of her best. Today she pulled out all the stops and deservedly took top spot. This plainly marked, pretty bitch is just coming into her own and presented a lovely picture both standing and moving. Gorgeous head and expression, well angulated with good length and depth of rib. Moved with confidence, covering the ground well. Clinched it with overall body condition. Can win well in any competition. Good luck. Best Bitch, BIS; 2. Griffiths Silene Blue Charm. 4 year old blue. Lovely old fashioned type with strong head still retaining femininity. So well constructed throughout and unlucky to meet 1 on such good form today. Could lose a little weight to enhance super shoulders on the move. Lost out for Res Best bitch to Veteran in such good shape; 3. Prescotts Calston’s Perfect Dream. 4 year old slate. Nice honest type with no major faults. Liked her head and overall proportions, just preferred front of 1. Another who could be fitter to advantage.

Open (2,2)

Bred by Exhibitor 1. B. Brenna’s Venture; 2. C. Perfect Dream

Not Bred by Exhibitor (7,4) 1. T. Mystic Melody at Westbere; 2. B. Enamour; 3. Oldham & Thompson’s Deanfield Brown Sugar. 5 year old light brown, strongly made but feminine. Lovely proportions and well constructed, unfortunately carrying far too much weight which spoilt what I would imagine could be very smooth movement. Lacked animation.

Veteran (5,1) 1. Stevens Whistbrae Pebbles. 8 year old dark slate, plainly marked, very old fashioned type with superb head and expression. Have always liked this bitch. Super front and rear angulation enabling her to move so freely with typical Beardie presence. Fit and well, could not be denied Res Best Bitch and Best Veteran. Just lost out to a younger lady on form on the day; 2. Peirson’s Ch Kiltondale Dignity. 8 year old worthy Ch of nice type. Strongly made, well constructed but was carrying just a little too much weight on the day, unlucky to meet 1 on form; 3. Parkin’s Sunkap Savannah for Rosimar. 12 years young and looking half her age. Really enjoying her day out. Nicely constructed in wonderful coat, not moving with the same length of stride and the first two. A credit to her owner, a lovely character. Thank you for bringing all your lovely veterans.

Special Working (1,0) 1. Wilford’s Osmart Hayleys Sadie Black. 18 months dark slate, old fashioned type. Well made throughout and in fit, hard condition, just lacks size. Moved well.

Brace (1,0) 1. Oldham & Thompson’s Deanfield the Consort & Deanfield Brown Sugar. Well matched light browns. Half brother and sister moving in unison. Well handled.
